The Ultimate Guide to Motorcycle Chain Maintenance
Your motorcycle’s drive chain is the hardest-working component of your bike, responsible for transferring all that engine power to the rear wheel. However, because it is exposed to road grit, rain, and heat, it requires regular attention to prevent premature wear and power loss.
1. Why Maintenance Matters
Neglecting your chain doesn’t just lead to a noisy ride; it can be dangerous and expensive.
-
Reduced Friction: A clean, lubricated chain moves with minimal resistance, ensuring more power reaches the asphalt.
-
Longevity: Regular care can double the life of your chain and sprockets, saving you from a costly replacement.
-
Safety: A dry or rusted chain can develop “kinks” or stiff links, which can eventually cause the chain to snap or jump off the sprocket.
2. The Three-Step Process
For the best results, always follow this order: Clean, Dry, and Lube.
-
Step 1: The Deep Clean Use a dedicated chain cleaner spray and a grunge brush to break down old grease and trapped sand. Avoid using harsh chemicals like petrol, which can damage the delicate O-rings or X-rings inside the chain.
-
Step 2: Dry It Thoroughly Before applying fresh lube, ensure the chain is dry. Using a lint-free cloth helps remove any leftover cleaning solvent that might break down your new lubricant.
-
Step 3: Precise Lubrication Apply a high-quality chain lube to the inside of the chain (the side touching the sprockets) while rotating the wheel. This allows centrifugal force to pull the lube into the links as you ride.
3. When Should You Do It?
As a general rule, you should clean and lube your chain every 500–700 km. However, if you’ve just finished a rainy ride or a dusty off-road trail, you should attend to it immediately to prevent surface rust.
Technical Pro-Tip
Always check your chain tension after cleaning. A chain that is too tight can damage your gearbox bearings, while one that is too loose can slap against the swingarm.
